FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

"To be appreciated one day out of the year means a lot to the veteran," said veteran Bill Gramer.

Gramer was the keynote speaker at festivities in downtown Flint.

Also on hand: the city's new mayor, Dr. Karen Weaver.

"This is such an important occasion, I wouldn't miss it for the world," Weaver said.

Every branch of our military took part in the program at McFarlan Memorial Park, which featured other local civic leaders.

For the men and woman in uniform who fought for our country, their focus today was on the children from Doyle-Rider Elementary School.

Vietnam veteran Joe Mishler said young Americans need to be reminded of one key fact.

"Freedom is not free and there are people who are winning to step forward and put their life on the line and make sure that our country stays as wonderful as it is," Mishler said.
