Windstorms knock down trees, take out power lines

GENESEE COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

Stacy Warner got a call from a neighbor while she was at work, shortly before 11 a.m.

"The neighbor across the street called and she's like yeah there's a tree down in your yard which took a power line down. And I don't know if it hit your house," Warner said.

She lives in the Genesee County community of Gaines Township. That area was hardest hit by power outages due to strong winds.

The gusts brought down this massive pine tree in her front yard. Crews from Consumers Energy were at her home repairing the lines it took with it on its way to the ground. Warner is just glad the damage wasn't worse.

"I'm just glad it didn't hit my house," Warner said.

That same tree is believed to have knocked out power down the street at K and M Party Store. The owner, Michelle Lauer said she had a crazy morning due to the power outage.

Lauer spent the better part of her shift in the dark, managing to keep her business open with the help of portable power.

"Right now we're on a generator. We've got everything on the generator what we can put on with the little one that we have," Lauer said.

Lauer said she knew the high winds were coming and prayed for the power to stay on. Of course, that didn't happen. Now she just wants her work day to end on a brighter note.

"I hope they can get the power back on and the weather just bypasses us," Lauer said.

Warner said she knows just what she'll do with the big tree in her yard.

"Well, we burn wood so I guess we have some wood to burn," Warner said.
