UM-Flint student raises awareness, donations for homeless

The cold, cutting wind that whips through Flint makes sleeping outside a real-life nightmare for Europe Dye.

"It gets hectic, especially during the cold months," Dye said. "Especially trying to find something to eat."

Dye has lived on the streets on and off again for the last 20 years. He said on most days, he goes unnoticed.

"It's an everyday struggle," Dye said.

But JeCorey Hawkins is one person who doesn't turn a blind eye.

"I've seen homeless people, I've seen people just out on their last luck," Hawkins said.

Hawkins is an UM-Flint student and a member of the Phi Beta Sigma fraternity.

On Thursday, he spent a cold night outside to simulate homelessness and advocate for the estimated 3,000 homeless people in Genesee County.

"It is very humbling, and it gives us a chance to give back, that's the most important thing," Hawkins said.

He'll be outside all night collecting food, clothes, and money with his fraternity brothers.

And donate it all back to those who need it.

"The looking good, feeling good part of it, that's like the bottom half of it, because at the end of the day, with our fraternity or not, there's still a need to give back," Hawkins said.

Dye said nights out on the streets will only get colder.

But Hawkins’ work gives him added comfort knowing people do care.

"Come together to try to help some of these people out here, because we're people too," Dye said.
