Do your homework, different types of flu shots this year

Posted: Updated:
SAGINAW COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

Like most of us, Tiffany Cole doesn’t want the flu.

That’s why she’s getting her annual flu shot. But what she gets, and what someone else gets might be different things.

“This year there’s what is called a trivalent flu shot,” said John McKellar, Saginaw County Health Officer.

McKeller says that shot will protect against three strains of the virus.

But some doctors offer another option.

"There's one that's also called a quadrivalent vaccine, and that protects against four strains of the flu," said McKellar.

So which shot should you get? McKellar says both are good options.

"Our recommendation is to get whatever is available to you from whatever provider that you go to."

Cole says she'll probably go with the quadrivalent vaccine just to play it safe.
