FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

Mayor Karen Weaver confirmed to TV5 that Howard Croft, the face of the Flint water crisis and the public works director, is indeed calling it quits.

"I do understand that Howard tendered his resignation letter today," Weaver said. "I'm hoping that he transitions out smoothly and I wish him the best."

Croft has been facing mounting criticism for weeks. Many call him the point man for the water policies of former Mayor Dayne Walling.

“This is tough times that we are living in,” said City Council President Kerry Nelson. “We accept his resignation and we are looking forward to moving on and getting someone who will do the job and not that he didn't do the job, but the one who's qualified."

Weaver said she doesn’t want to rush to judgement in seeking a replacement.

“It's a very important position and we are not going to rush to,” Weaver said. “We want to make sure we have the right person. Because this has been a huge issue as far as what's been going on with the water.”
