Democrats outraged over proposed straight-ticket voting ban

Posted: Updated:
LANSING, MI (WNEM) -

Michigan Democrats are outraged over a new bill that would ban straight party voting.

A bill to ban the practice passed the senate last week. Straight tickets allow voters to just vote for all the candidates in one party, rather that voting for each candidate individually.

Supporters said voting should be about the candidate, not the party.

Democrats said it's about taking votes away from them, since studies show more Democrats are using the straight tickets.

The people of Michigan voted to allow straight tickets about 15 years ago, but if this bill passes it would supersede the voters.
