LANSING, MI (AP) -

Gov. Rick Snyder says financial literacy courses will help Michigan high school students be better equipped to understand and manage their personal finances.

Snyder's office on Monday announced that he signed legislation that allows the Michigan Merit Curriculum half-credit economic requirement to be satisfied by completing a course in personal economics that includes a financial literacy component.

In a statement, Snyder says: "Learning how to navigate personal finances and budgeting in the real world is an important life skill for young adults." He says the courses will help improve Michigan's economy and allow students to "guide their own financial futures."
