Charlie Sheen's HIV-positive announcement brings awareness back to disease

Posted: Updated:

Tonya Simon is with the Saginaw County Department of Public Health.

"I think it brings awareness back to HIV," Simon said.

She said Charlie Sheen's announcement he is HIV-positive and his lifestyle, which included unprotected sex, serves as a lesson to us all.

"They should know their partner. And again they should talk openly about HIV prior to any sex acts," Simon said.

Simon said people who have HIV live a better quality of life than in decades past. But she urges everyone to be safe and get tested.

"There is a number of newer drugs out that prevent people from getting full blown AIDS, so HIV is not a death sentence," Simon said. "However people should want to know and want to protect themselves and others from the disease."
