Retired police detective charged with child pornography felonies

A retired police detective has been charged with eight felony counts related to child pornography.

Brent David Vanderhaar, 51, of Flint Township, was arrested on charges by Michigan State Police as he was returning from a deer hunting trip on Nov. 17.

According to MSP, Vanderhaar stopped at a gas station and convenience store on Nov. 6 in Kawkawlin Township in Bay County where he dropped three SD cards later found by store employees.

A manager viewed the images and they appeared to be images of a minor. The manager reported this to police who began an investigation.

Vanderhaar is a former Saginaw police detective.

He has been charged with the following counts: child sexually abusive activity, four counts of using a computer to commit a crime, and three counts of capturing/distributing image of unclothed person.

Vanderhaar was arraigned on Nov. 18
