BAY CITY, MI (WNEM) -

Holiday shopping may already be underway, but one organization is hoping you’ll add another person to your list: the troops overseas.

“Some soldiers don't have a family, some don't receive care packages at all, especially at a crucial time like this, during the holidays, it's important that they know we are thinking of them,” said Melissa Alex.

Alex is the co-founder of the Yellow Ribbon Guard. She said the effort to Send Santa to the Troops is the biggest donation drive of the year.

“They can drop off items to the Bay City armory,” Alex said. “That's one of the drop off locations for donations, were also accepting monetary donations to help with shipping, last year we spent $16,000 in shipping costs.”

Travis George is a program coordinator for Send Santa to the Troops.

“It gives them a little piece of home, things we are looking for are things like Germack peanuts, something local, here to Michigan, we try to concentrate on the local military here,” George said.

Stuff the bus weekend starts on Friday. It's the last big weekend for the package drive.

George is helping get those wheels rolling.

“Friday we are going to be here at Garber Buick,” George said. “Saturday we are going to be at Northland Wholesale Outlets in Pinconning and Sunday we will be at Kmart parking lot in Bay City, and on Monday to wrap it all up, we will be at the Bay City armory on Wilder Road, packing up all the donations. The public is welcome to come help.”

This year at least 1,100 Mid-Michigan deployed service members will get Christmas because of the volunteers in our area.

“It's just nice to see everyone coming together, to make something happen, because we couldn't do it without the community,” Alex said.
