City condemns apartment building, family given five days to find new home

As Thanksgiving approaches, Anita Wilson said she's thankful for her family and their health.

But she is worried that she may be spending it on the streets.

"We've got within five days to find somewhere else to move to," Wilson said.

On Friday, the city of Flint condemned the Ballenger Court Apartments, the complex she's called home for the last three years.

The notice went up just two days after the water was shut off.

"If you're going to be a landlord, do your job," Wilson said.

Wilson's daughter and her three children live in another unit and are also looking for a new home.

In the last year, she said the apartment complex has fallen into disrepair.

Thieves have stripped and vandalized some of the buildings, and Wilson said the property management company has done nothing about it.

"They wanted the rent money, but they weren't putting the money where they were supposed to, back into the building," Wilson said.

Alltimate Property Management, the company that manages Ballenger Court Apartments was closed for the night when TV5 stopped by, but new carpet was being installed in the office.

"Their famous words is: we're sorry. Sorry for what? Sorry for being a sorry landlord?" Wilson said.

For now, Wilson is scrambling to find a place to stay and said she’s determined not to let this set back ruin her holiday.

"They're trying to take us down, but guess what, I'm still standing," Wilson said. "And I'm going to have a good Thanksgiving, and I'm going to have a smile on my face, and I'm going to enjoy it."

Wilson said only a handful of families live in the complex.
