Yellow Ribbon Guard packs more than 500 boxes to send to troops overseas

Posted: Updated:
BAY CITY, MI (WNEM) -

It's the final packing day for Send Santa to the Troops. Volunteers from all across the community gathered early Monday morning to get packages ready for our service men and women.

Recently engaged, Jenna Kirkton, was here packing boxes to feel closer to her fiancé who is overseas.

“We actually got engaged just a couple weeks ago before he left. He left right after, so we haven't been able to spend a lot of time together,” Kirkton said.

Kirkton won't be able to see her future husband for nearly a year. That's why she said it feels great to be surrounded by people that care, like Santa who gathered his reindeer and made a special appearance.

“I've had a blast. It's so much fun,” Santa said. “So rewarding, to collect these food items and downtime items, it's not just food, a candy bar from home, these guys and gals go crazy.”

Organizers and volunteers will pack over 500 boxes full of goodies which has everything from beef jerky to crossword puzzles.

Volunteers said they can't wait until next year, to do it all again.

“Amazing, amazing, you get behind someone in line and their talking about their experience or who they have in the service. It's a wonderful feeling,” said volunteer Fran Dombrowski.

Monday is the last packing day of the year to Send Santa to the Troops.

However, the Yellow Ribbon Guard takes and encourages donations all year round. Organizers said it's really important to our service men and women to get these special packages out.

It's also very important to Jenna Kirkton.

“Today is so special, not just to me, but for anyone here involved in the organization and what we are doing, because they give so much, and sacrifice so much, and for us to be able to send them a little bit of home, it's just very emotional,” Kirkton said.

Send Santa to the Troops isn’t the only donation drive the Yellow Ribbon Guard hosts. If you’d like to send money or donation to the organization, they can be mailed to:
