SAGINAW COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

Imran Khan is a sophomore at Saginaw Valley State University, all the way from Bangladesh.

"Understanding people's views, I think that's kind of the way to remove all the ignorance that we have,” Khan said.

Khan is studying computer science.

“The plan is first get some internships,” Khan said. “Then get some experience and then go back to my own country and start my own business hopefully.”

Over the last few years, there's been a steady increase of international students enrolled at Mid-Michigan universities.

  • Central Michigan has nearly 1,400 international students.
  • SVSU has more than 900
  • University of Michigan, Flint has more than 700
  • Kettering University has around 200 students

Jenna Briggs oversees the international student program at SVSU.

She said international students are all here on student visas. They must be enrolled in at least 12 credit hours and can't have a job off-campus.

"They're here to be a student they're here to take classes and we are making sure that they're doing that," Briggs said.

Growing up in Bangladesh, Khan is also a Muslim. He wants to make it clear that terror attacks from groups like ISIS are the opposite of what his religion promotes.

"If you are a true Muslim, you'd never support any kind of these things going on right now in the world," Khan said.

Khan also said it'd be a shame for America to prevent more people from coming into the United States when there's still so much to learn about and gain from each other.

“Why would I lose this opportunity to get to know different culture, different people and also why would I miss the opportunity to share my own culture with different people from other culture,” Khan said.
