LAPEER COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

One Michigan law enforcement officer has created an improvement program geared at inmates.

The program trains and certifies the inmates in CPR and AED. It’s designed to benefit the inmates’ skills and enhance their quality of life for their families and the community, the Lapeer County Sheriff’s Department said.

The program was started by Sgt. Keith Merser with the department. Inmates who are scheduled to be released in the near future can participate in the training.

Merser teams up with the Lapeer County Emergency Medical Service to provide the CPR training.

“Not only does this progressive training plan enhance our inmate’s employment/life skills upon their reentry into the community, they then also become a possible ‘life saver,’” the sheriff’s department said on its Facebook page.
