Summertime tradition facing cancellation due to funding

Posted: Updated:
BAY CITY, MI (WNEM) -

It looks like there may not be River Roar Boat Races next year.

The Bay City Board of Directors says that at this time the races will most likely be canceled.

The board cites the loss of sponsorship, increased costs, and inclement weather during the 2015 event as contributing factors.

Alternate funding sources and cost cutting measures are being considered, but the board reports that if funding isn’t in place by January 15, the event will be canceled.

The Bay City River Roar donates more than $1.5 million to local charities, but the board says the current shortfall in funding will not allow for charitable donations in 2015.

Next year would be the 29th year of boat racing on the Saginaw River.
