SAGINAW COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

As family members and friends make their way home for Thanksgiving, many will head to the bars tonight to celebrate the start of the four-day holiday weekend.

Lt. Chris Luty is with the Michigan State Police.

“This is the busiest bar night of the year and we want people to have fun and enjoy themselves but they have to do it in moderation,” Luty said.

He said extra troopers will be on the road Wednesday night, cracking down on anyone who gets behind the wheel while under the influence.

"The alternatives could certainly be ugly we don't want to see people killed on this holiday season we want everyone to get home safe," Luty said.

Thanksgiving is second deadliest Michigan holiday for traffic crashes.

And before you step into the bar, police want to make sure you have a plan to get home safely.

"There are a lot of options to get home safely and we plead with the public to take advantage of those options if you have any doubt you may have had too much to drink call a friend, call a relative take a taxi, please get home safely," Luty said.
