Annual run collects food for charities

MIDLAND, MI (WNEM) -

Dozens helped kick start their metabolism before their big Thanksgiving feast with a nice, long run.

For Steve Leibfritz, Thanksgiving is for the birds, or bird hats that is.

“It's the only time of year I can get the hat out,” Leibfritz said.

As he prepared to run for the 20th Annual Midland Turkey Trot, with turkey hat in place, he said he loves to catch up with past running buddies every year.

“I also coach track at Midland High so a lot of our past athletes that are now college athletes or just runners come down and we get to see them again and connect with your running family,” Leibfritz said.

Whether you're an early bird or just a morning trotter, there's a race, and a start time for you.

Kayleen Kindey and John Sira are training together for three half marathons, so they knew they couldn't skip the trot for some extra sleep

“I think it's awesome, everybody comes out together and runs together. I think it's pretty cool,” Kindey said.

Sira said, “We run together all the time, and we thought it'd be fun to run a race together.”

The Early Bird Trot also collects food for the Midland Community Family Centers.

The extra food donated helps the charities get through the winter. This year, it looks like the runners have met their goal, according to organizer Jill Gushow.

“So far it's looking really good. The bins are starting to overflow plus we have lots packed in to our cars,” Gushow said. “And also Kroger here in Midland has always donated lots of food for us as well.”

Was a little rain enough to keep these turkey's from trotting? Well, of course not.

“It’s not the greatest, but it works,” Kindey said.

Sira said, “It’s not snowing.”

Leibfitz said he'll take the rain. It's far better than previous years.

“It's not cold, so I’ll take it. We're used to the snow so we'll take when it's 50 degrees almost,” Leibfitz said.
