Holiday shopping season in full swing

SAGINAW COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

Big box stores welcome thousands of customers each day, but local shops are trying to bring in more customers and cash in on spending sprees during the holiday shopping season.

Greg Schmidt is like a lot of people hitting the stores in search of that perfect gift.

"I'm just out doing my holiday shopping," Schmidt said. "I did find something you know and got something but who knows what else I'll find."

Businesses we talked to at Fashion Square Mall said sales are up since Black Friday. Customers seemed to agree.

One good indicator of business is Santa Claus, who said a lot of kids have been giving him their Christmas wish list.

"Black Friday it was elbow to elbow in here it was packed full. And then Saturday was good and Sunday was good," Santa Claus said.

And with 24 shopping days left until Christmas, Santa said he's making sure he keeps the shelves at the mall fully stocked.

"Got the elves really busy they're hammering out the toys this year. We've got a lot of kids wanting a lot of electronics and games and stuff," Santa Claus said.

Schmidt said while he enjoys getting presents, he wants a gift that you can't measure in dollars and cents.

"I have a lot of health problems, my wife has got problems and hope the family stays healthy and everybody stays healthy," Schmidt said.
