Police offer tips to protect your holiday packages

Posted: Updated:
SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

When holiday online shopping packages arrive at your home, how do you make sure they’re safe from thieves?

Michelle McGregor will be like millions of others who will shop online for Cyber Monday.

"As a matter of fact, I found an item that I will be picking up today, because it's only on sale today, half off, so yeah," McGregor said.

If she has that item shipped to her house, there is something she should do to try and make sure the parcel doesn't get stolen, according to Saginaw Township Police Chief Don Pussehl.

"Try to have that box taken into your home as soon as possible, if you're going to be gone if you know your neighbor well enough maybe they can take that in for you when the delivery is made," Pussehl said.

Pussehl's advice is something McGregor agrees with, plus she takes an extra security step.

"I usually have somebody there that can actually pick up the package or I usually have it delivered to my job," McGregor said.

Once the gifts are inside the home, thieves can still get a good idea of what’s inside the home. The packaging of many high-priced gifts can make a home a target.

"I'd encourage them as they put out those boxes for disposal to fold them up, and to try to make them as compact as possible and not make them as noticeable," Pussehl said.

And another tip from Pussehl, if you're out looking for gifts locally, make sure that you keep those presents in a certain part of your vehicle.

"I would suggest placing those gifts in the trunk of your vehicle so they're out of sight," Pussehl said.

McGregor added her own tip on how to prevent someone from stealing gifts from your house.

"When it comes to home security, I think people should think of what a robber would do, and sometimes not be a little naive about our things but if we become more conscious of what a robber would then we put ourselves up," McGregor said.
