Marijuana dispensary burns down, owner arrested

THETFORD TOWNSHIP, MI (WNEM) -

A medical marijuana dispensary and grow operation went up in flames.

Medical marijuana shops have become almost commonplace throughout northern Genesee County. But it appears the owner may have broken the law.

"It's very concerning," said Ruth Patterson.

Patterson said late last night she noticed something suspicious across the street: an empty parking lot in front of Five Star Meds, except one vehicle, a black van.

"I wish I would have reported it," Patterson said.

Patterson spotted the van a few hours before the building caught fire.

"I called it in, they said a rig was on the way," Patterson said.

While Patterson waited for emergency crews to arrive, she shot video of the blaze with her cell phone. She said this fire is the third within a few weeks and that has her wondering what’s happening in her neighborhood.

"So many fires have been happening in such a short time frame," Patterson said.

Drug enforcement agents were on the scene Tuesday afternoon, removing several dozen marijuana plants.

Police said one of the owners of Five Star Meds was arrested, and the business may have been operating illegally.

Five Star Meds is located in an area known as the “Green Triangle” because of all the medical marijuana facilities located nearby.

Patterson said she is less concerned with those type of businesses, but more concerned about who set the first and now the second structure on fire right across the street from her home.

Police have not said whether or not the owners of Five Star Meds will face any charges.
