Man reaching out to community for assistance

SAGINAW TOWNSHIP, MI (WNEM) -

A man, struggling with his weight and numerous medical conditions, in need of some help.

Bob Hartung said because of those issues, everyday tasks like going to the bathroom have become daily obstacles.

“I started crying... I don't know what to do,” Hartung said.

Three years ago, Hartung contracted a staff infection. That infection got worse and caused lymphedema in his legs, which are now almost too large to move.

“The right leg measures, like, 40 inches around, and the other one is holding its own, it's not as big,” Hartung said.

It's caused Hartung's life to change. He's only able to get out of his chair a couple times a day.

“It's, it's just hard,” Hartung said.

It's been seven months since Hartung's been able to see his doctor. He needs someone to visit him at home, but his insurance doesn't cover it.

That's why Hartung reached out to the TV5 Rescue Squad, looking for help.

Hartung needs help to reconfigure his bathroom, so it's big enough to do his daily activities.

The bathroom is small for even someone without Hartung's condition.

He washes himself in the sink, because he can't get into the shower.

Diane Czerney is not only Hartung’s wife, she’s also acting as his caretaker.

“I work a full time job. But a lot of that goes to paying for things he has to have,” Czerney said. “There's just not a whole lot left over.”

She does what she can to help her husband, but she knows she needs a hand.

“It is very hard on her. It would help me, my mind, to know she doesn't have to do a lot of this,” Hartung said.

The couple said Hartung needs a way to get medical visits at home, so he can get better.

In the meantime, he needs a new chair, and help making his home more accessible.

“It would be wonderful. I'm telling you, it would be very wonderful,” Czerney said, becoming emotional.
