Michigan businesses ready to see it snow

“Very anxious, I love skiing,” said Chris Grigg.

Grigg and his family go skiing in northern Michigan just about every weekend of the winter.

They're ready to see some snow, so they can hit the slopes again soon.

“Hopefully there's not much up there right now,” said Denny Whalen. “We close and then do a snow dance every night.”

Whalen owns the Stable of Saginaw, an outdoor sports store that sells skis snowboards and more.

He said the amount of snow on the ground can have a significant impact on business.

"Our December, that can be a 20 percent swing with snow or without snow," Whalen said.

Whalen said last November, when Mid-Michigan had a lot snow, his shop saw record profits.

But with only one big snowfall so far this year, Whalen said accepting the warmer weather conditions is part of the job.

"This isn't my first rodeo, we've a couple soft years in the 90s and it happens and we just deal with it," Whalen said.

They're also making due without snow at Apple Mountain in Freeland.

Crews are ready to start making snow for their ski mountain.

But they first need the cold temperatures to keep it from melting, according to Kathy Schofield.

“We'd like to open mid-December and we're still planning to do that we're just not as optimistic as we were last week. But it just takes a couple days to pump out some snow with some good temps so hopefully it'll be just a few days later this year,” Schofield said.
