Union members displeased with UAW compromises with Nexteer

Posted: Updated:

Don Merrow works in production at Nexteer Automotive.

"A lot of us members are upset," Merrow said.

While contract talks between the company and his union, UAW local 699, have resulted in a tentative agreement, he said not all is well below the surface.

"We were not happy with what was presented. We feel like we're being sold short by our union," Merrow said.

And Merrow is not alone.

Dozens of Nexteer workers have either posted on Facebook or called TV5 to complain about the contract. Like Merrow, many said it gives up too many benefits and that union leadership is trying to rush the vote on a Sunday.

Local 699 president Rick Burzynski declined comment for this story.

And Nexteer, for their part, in a statement released yesterday, said the two sides believe the contract recognizes the contributions of the employees and the commitment of Nexteer.

But Merrow disagrees.

"The union knew that we were not going to take any concessions and we've conceded more than we've actually gained in what has been presented to us," Merrow said.

Merrow has a message for union leadership heading into this weekend's vote.

"You are representing us. Hear our voices, hear what we want, and let’s get this done," Merrow said.

Other members said they don’t think this contract will get approved.
