Religious leaders speak out against radicalization

GENESEE COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

Local Islamic leaders are denouncing acts of terrorism in the name of their religion.

Muhammad Abdullah Waheed is an educator at the Flint Islamic Center.

"Radicalization is not just associated to one religion or one ethnicity or one race. It's a mentality ideology that is fueled by ignorance and also by other motives," Waheed said.

He teaches his young students to steer clear of anyone who may try to radicalize them.

"We know you will never come near these types of movements. But be aware that these who are doing what they're doing in the name of Islam, these radical movements or these extremists who conduct massacre attacks across the states, these are not something Islam promotes or even encourages," Waheed said.

Other Muslims condemned the mass shooting that took place in California earlier this week.

Abdelmagid Jondy is president of the Islamic Center. He said the suspects in the San Bernadino shooting might be Muslim but the similarities end there.

"These people deserve what they got. And their bodies should be thrown in the garbage to be an example for others who go and commit such a stupid crime," Jondy said.

He said their harmful actions don't represent what Islam is really about.

"Islam promotes peace. In the holy Quran, it says you kill one person it looks like you killed the whole world," Jondy said.

Waheed said that extremist groups like ISIS kill Muslims every day. He said everyone should know they want to put a stop to ISIS just like every other American.

"I think the biggest losers in these radical movements are the Muslims because it hurts harms us before it hurts or harms any other religion or group. Because we are the ones that have to somehow apologize for these situations," Waheed said.
