Radio personalities camping out for toy drive

BAY CITY, MI (WNEM) -

Two men and a trailer.

That's what the weekend holds for local radio personalities Josh Sharrow and Shawn Doyle.

“They say, what? You're staying a trailer for a whole weekend? I say, yeah, we're doing a toy drive and we'll stay in there until Sunday getting as many toys as we can,” Doyle said.

A toy drive may not seem unusual this time of year, but Sharrow said he knew he had to do something unusual to get people's attention

“You can do a toy drive with boxes in stores, and we do have a few locations, but we're on Euclid and there's thousands and thousands of cars that drive by everyday so hopefully you can get their attention,” Sharrow said.

In the four years the pair have been doing this, they've helped over 5,000 kids

The toys collected will go to the Bay City Lions Club, who has an annual party to distribute the toys.

“Some of these kids that's the only gift they'll get this year. It's a great thing they're doing for us,” said Ed Reaume, Bay City Lions Club.

Sure, it's not exactly prime camping season.

But even though it's cold, these two aren't exactly roughin' it.

“People think we're really roughin’ it, but we're really not. We have heat, people bring us food, we have cell phones, we have TV5, we're not roughin’ it by any means,” Sharrow said.

But even though it's not much of a sacrifice given the amenities, Sharrow and Doyle said giving up their weekend to camp out on the side of the street is all about making kids’ Christmases a little happier

“You've taken three days off on a weekend to help out just one is worth it for us,” Doyle said.
