Elementary school donates 5,000 pounds of food to pantry

A local school presented a Mid-Michigan food pantry with a major donation on Monday.

Sherwood Elementary in Saginaw Township collected for the "I support the one percent," a non-profit serving Michigan vets and their families.

They broke up into different military branches in a competition to gather the most food.

“We were told that boy if we could come up with about a thousand pounds of food that would be a wonderful donation and we ended up getting over 5,000 pounds of food,” said Principal Mark Abenth. “We're just overwhelmed because you see our school is little as far as kids go, they're 5-6 years old and to see how a little child can make that much of a difference in the community it was just wonderful.”

All that food will directly benefit families of servicemen and women in the Saginaw County area.
