Police: Toys R Us shooting 'random act of violence'

Posted: Updated:

An argument inside the store left one man injured.

The altercation began inside the Toys R Us on S. Linden Road in Flint Township. According to police, the argument was taken outside into the parking lot where a 25-year-old Flint man was shot.

Police said the victim attempted to get in his vehicle to chase down the person who shot him. He eventually stopped in the parking lot of the nearby Sears before police arrived. He was transported to Hurley Hospital for treatment for his injuries.

Police said his injuries are non-life-threatening. He was struck in the leg by a bullet.

"Thank God nobody else got shot," said Sgt. Kevin Salter, Flint Township Police.

The suspect, an 18-year-old Flint man, was later located at his residence. Police located two handguns at the residence and confirmed one of them was stolen, police said. The suspect was arrested for assault with intent to murder.

21-year-old Flint female later turned herself in at the Flint Township Police Department in connection to the shooting. She was arrested for accessory after the fact to a felony.

What spurred this violence? Salter said it was a sign of disrespect  from one shopper to the other.

"It wasn't a fight over a toy or anything like that, they just looked at each other wrong," Salter said.

Police said the confrontation was totally random.

"It could happen anywhere, it just happened to happen at a Toys R Us at 5:30 p.m. during holiday shopping time," Salter said. "So, just be aware of what's going on around you."
