Woman fighting cancer in need of home repairs

During the holidays, Alice Maxwell likes to dust off the family photo albums.

She said looking through them brings back the days before cancer was in the picture.

Before the disease killed her husband, Russell, a few years ago and took her sister Ellen just last year.

"It's just a chain of cancer through our family," Maxwell said.

And now she is fighting her own battle.

"I don't know if I'll be here next Christmas," Maxwell said.

Doctors discovered a cancerous mass above her lung and she receives radiation treatments daily.

It's been a devastating time for her and her family, said her grandson James Forbes.

"We are at our wits end," Forbes said.

He said the disease has had an equally devastating effect on her finances, draining her bank account and now her home is falling into disrepair.

"Funeral costs, Ellen's funeral costs, and that's where a big chunk of it went," Maxwell said.

Forbes said, "All the bills along the years, all the medical bills, and trying to just keep everything up."

He said her front door had a leak and water has damaged an entire side of her home.

There are portions of the home that are completely rotted and a few broken windows the family simply can't afford to fix.

"Needs to be done, otherwise, it's just going to fall apart, and she's not going to have anything she's going to be able to do," Forbes said.

Maxwell said this Christmas she could use a miracle.

"My biggest wish, for me, is I would just love to see my family and friends have a wonderful holiday," Maxwell said.
