UAW announces tentative agreement with Nexteer

Posted: Updated:

The UAW Local 699 Facebook page announced a tentative deal has been reached with Nexteer.

The UAW workers had previously voted no to a tentative contract agreement with Nexteer. A tentative contract was approved by union leadership, but the rank and file voted it down.

Union workers told TV5 on Sunday they didn't like the contract and thought the UAW could have worked harder to improve their wages and benefits. There were 3,103 no votes and 80 yes votes. The UAW Local 699 released the results Monday morning on its Facebook page.

The union said they listened and submitted a new proposal to Nexteer on Monday.

On Monday evening, UAW leadership told members if Nexteer didn't accept the proposal, the union would go on strike at 11:59 p.m.

At 12:02 p.m., the UAW Local's Facebook page announced the strike.

On Tuesday, Nexteer released a statement:

"We are currently working with the UAW to resolve the issue in a timely manner. Our 1,800+ salaried workforce at the Saginaw facility remains focused on continuing to service our customers."

According to Gerald Kariem, UAW region director, talks began with Nexteer on Tuesday morning and concluded at 7:45 p.m.

"This is huge for Saginaw," Kariem said. "This is one of the largest employers in the community."

Kariem was not able to provide details on the agreement reached by Nexteer and the UAW, but said third-shift employees were to report to work.

"The strike is over," Kariem said.

Nexteer is a major supplier for General Motors and Chrysler.
