UAW members 'could not get behind' Nexteer deal

SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

Usually in the mid-afternoon, Sherry Schluckebier is working inside Nexteer Automotive's plant in Buena Vista Township.

"This is not something we could have got behind," Schluckebier said.

On Tuesday, she was outside striking after the company and union leaders failed to reach a new contract.

Even with the holidays approaching, Thomas Foster said his union brothers and sisters just couldn't bring himself to vote yes to a tentative agreement union leaders and the company put on the table.

Fosters said union members had more in mind than holiday shopping.

“When you have limited income and the cost of living goes up, it makes it harder and harder,” Fosters said.

The United Auto Workers Local 699 represents more than 3,000 workers at Nexteer's World Headquarters in Saginaw Township.

A few weeks ago, workers voiced their concern with union representatives when they learned union leaders had reached a tentative agreement with the company. That deal, according to Schluckebier, did not properly address health care coverage concerns and level the playing field in terms of wages.
