Police giving out turkeys instead of tickets

ROSCOMMON COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

Officers on patrol are pulling drivers over, but not to give them a ticket.

Police and deputies in Roscommon County gave drivers a surprise as part of a program called “Operation: Present Patrol.”

“They’re legitimate traffic stops – speeding violations, lane usage, defective equipment, things of that nature – and after we run them and make sure that they’re not wanted or, you know, if they have valid driver’s licenses, instead of issuing citations for the motor vehicle violation, they issue a turkey instead,” said Roscommon County Sheriff Ed Stern.

The program is sponsored by local rotary clubs.

They raised more than $3,000 for all the turkeys and gift cards.
