TUSCOLA COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

A silent auction and benefit dinner is scheduled for Friday to help those impacted by a fire that destroyed a business, and several apartments in a Mid-Michigan community.

The fire broke out on Dec. 9 on the 8500 block of State Road in downtown Millington. That's in Tuscola County.

The fire impacted the Sweet Southern Spice Bakery and three apartment units inside the building.

Firefighters shut down M-15 through town while they battled the blaze.

State fire marshals are investigating, and trying to determine a cause.

"I could see the fire from a mile away. It literally looked like the sun had set in this town, and you could see smoke even in the dark. It was really bad," said Tina Sentell.

Sentell works across the street from Sweet Southern Spice Bakery. She said the new owners took over the bakery last summer and it has only been open a short while.

"They worked really, really hard to try to get it to where it was at today, and it's really sad to see it burn down," Sentell.

The owner of the bakery, Pam Quirk, was burned on her arms, head and face. Michigan State Police Lt. David Kaiser said Quirk ran upstairs to alert residents to the fire.

Kaiser said she saved at least two people's lives.

A GoFundMe page has also been set up to help the owner of the bakery, Pam and her husband Ed. A Facebook page also lists some of the specific needs, and drop-off locations. Friday's silent auction and benefit dinner will be held at the Millington Church of God to help the bakery owners, and other families impacted by the fire.

"These people desperately need help," said resident Kim Belbeck. "That's one of the oldest buildings, that burned down, in our town."
