Marijuana, cell phones discovered in food shipment to Mid-Michigan prison

FREELAND, MI (WNEM) -

State police are investigating after contraband was discovered in a truck delivering food to a Mid-Michigan prison.

Michigan State Police Lt. David Kaiser said the contraband was found in a Sun Valley Food truck arriving at the Saginaw Correctional Facility in Freeland.

"It's not that common. It does happen from time to time," Kaiser said.

Police believe the items were intended for the prisoners inside.

"Inside of that package was a couple of cell phones and a quantity of marijuana," Kaiser said.

A Department of Corrections spokesperson, Chris Gautz, said they take incidents like these very seriously.

"This is a battle we face at all of our facilities through vehicles coming in, people coming in the visitors room, people throwing things over the fence, inside a variety of objects, or any number of ways," Gautz said.

Both the department of corrections and state police will conduct their own investigations.

So far, no arrests have been made, but police said they're glad the illegal deed was stopped.

"We work together as a team, and as a result, the contraband was seized and never made it into the prison," Gautz said.
