Bridge closer to being named after fallen sailor

MIDLAND, MI (WNEM) -

A push to name a local bridge after a fallen sailor is one step closer to reality.

The senate approved a bill to name a bridge in Midland after U.S. Navy Corpsman Aaron Ullom on Dec. 10.

On Jan. 26, the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure unanimously passed legislation for consideration by the full House.

Ullom was killed in Afghanistan in 2011 while saving a Marine’s life. For his actions, Ullom was awarded the Purple Heart.

His father, Kevin Ullom, spoke to TV5 about the honor on Dec. 10.

“It makes us feel very proud,” Kevin Ullom said. “We feel it’s something that he deserves for what he did. As my wife once said, he probably wouldn’t think so. But we certainly do.”

If passed, the bill would designate the bridge on U.S. 10 over Eastman Avenue as the Corpsman Aaron D. Ullom Memorial Bridge.

He graduated from Midland High School in 2009.
