SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

General Motors announced on Tuesday it’s investing $50 million into their GM Saginaw Metal Castings plant.

"It's great news. It's very important to the re-invention of Saginaw that we be able to create and maintain the jobs that are already here," said Annie Boensch, a council member for the city.

The money will be used for future drive line component production. That will retain dozens of jobs at the facility.

"We thank them for continuing to believe in our relationship and the value of them being here in our community and it's a great investment," Boensch said.

The move by GM will retain 68 employees at the plant. As far as Saginaw's bottom line goes, Boensch said every one of those positions matter.

"With our tax cap and property values being lower we look to our income tax. Whether that's a citizen who lives here and works here or whether that's someone who drives in from out of town and works here," Boensch said.

GM has invested $306 million dollars into Saginaw since 2011. For her part, Boensch wants to see that trend continue for years to come.

"We think that the valuable relationship there is going to continue to grow. We need those manufacturing jobs still here in town," Boensch said.
