GENESEE COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

Sure, the holiday season is a fun time for toys and decorating.

But not everyone can afford to fill the holidays with presents for their families.

“It's quite a wonderful feeling,” said Ted Sylvester, vice president of Toys for Tots Foundation.

That's why on Wednesday, Toys for Tots gave out toys to hundreds of families in Genesee County.

“An event like this really galvanizes a community, there's a lot of different folks that come here to help out. Local businesses and schools, service officials, police department,” Sylvester said.

Tables piled high with toys filled the gymnasium of Genesee High School.

It was a total of about 7,000 toys, bicycles, helmets and other fun things for kids to open on Christmas.

“The parents will come in, not the children. We like the parents to be the heroes on Christmas,” Sylvester said.

About 250 families arrived to pick up toys, that means more than 500 kids will have a merrier Christmas.

The distribution was funded by Detroit Pistons owner Tom Gores and his family.

Gores, has strong ties to Genesee County.

“He and his family, all his brothers and sisters went to this very high school, this year as they have since 2009, they contributed $250 million to us,” Sylvester said.

The families were pre-selected, and without this gift, many wouldn't have been able to provide Christmas gifts for their children.

“Lot of families are down on their luck at times and it's nice knowing you can help them out and share the magic of Christmas,” Sylvester said.
