Putting a stop to 'front porch shopping'

Posted: Updated:
SAGINAW COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

You see it happening across the country, thieves stealing packages right off front porches.

Some call it front porch shopping, and many victims don’t even realize it happened until days later.

Now the United States Postal Service is offering some advice on how to keep your deliveries safe.

“Customers are leaving us notifications that they don’t’ feel comfortable with us leaving packages at their house. They ask us to leave a notice on their door and pick it up at the post office,” said Carrie Downing, Postmaster for the City of Saginaw. “We have postal inspectors that are in unmarked vehicles that are driving in the neighborhoods right now confirming the safety of our packages and the safety of our customers.”

Downing urges everyone to sign up for email and text alerts so they know when a package will arrive. She also says her staff will stay alert.

“When you’re on the same route day after day they’re used to the vehicles in the neighborhoods, the people that are in neighborhoods. And when they see something that’s not right they know that they’re not leaving the packages.”
