Drones make popular gifts, but make sure you know the rules

SAGINAW TOWNSHIP, MI (WNEM) -

Drones are flying off the shelves this holiday season.

At Roger’s Hobby Center in Saginaw Township, Brian Schnieder says employees make it a point to tell customers what is considered legal, and illegal use when it comes to drones.

“You can’t fly over 400 feet, you can’t fly within five miles of an airport. You can’t fly beyond your line of site,” said Schneider.

Another thing to remember, the federal government now has registration requirements on some models.

“Anything between .55 and 55 pounds would need to be registered with the government,” said Schneider.

Schneider says because the laws and restrictions surrounding the unmanned flying devices have changed, the government likely wants to be able to inform users of any more changes. And also, be able to hold pilots accountable in case something goes wrong.

“Most of the people that have been found in violation of the law are not even aware that there were laws in the first place. So they’re trying to use this as a way to ramp up the way that they put the information out there,” said Schneider.

But even with the added regulations, Schneider doesn’t believe it will take away from business this holiday season. “I don’t think it’s going to be a major impediment.”
