LAPEER COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

A Mid-Michigan man has been charged with home invasion and assault after allegedly breaking into a house and spraying two people with pepper spray before dragging a woman through the home.

It happened at 1:44 a.m. at a home on Imlay City Road in Lapeer County’s Imlay City.

Deputies report that a 27-year-old woman and 19-year-old man were sleeping when Donald Smith, 27, from Imlay City, broke in and doused them with pepper spray. The couple woke up, and Smith allegedly grabbed the woman, whom he had a prior dating relationship with, and dragged her along the floor.

Deputies say the 19-year-old victim then got into a fight with the suspect, causing Smith to run off.

Smith was found at his home about a half-mile away and was taken into custody.

He has been charged with home invasion and two counts of assault and battery.

He has been released from jail and ordered to have no contact with the victims.
