Christmas light display delivers inspiring message

Across Mid-Michigan there are some impressive holiday lighting displays, but one of the biggest ones can be found in Bay City.

“We have a lot of fun with the holidays around here,” said Darraugh Opelski, Bay City resident.

Opelski said there are upwards of 10,000 lights shining bright and by Monday she’ll have about a dozen Christmas trees up. It’s no wonder her home won the city’s holiday lighting display contest last year.

“Christmas was always important at my house and my mom always made a very big deal out of it. And she did a very beautiful tree and got a lot of attention for it and I think it just kind of carried over with me,” she said.

As you pass Opelski’s house, there are five very special words that catch your eye and they’re more electric than the display itself. It reads “Mom, fight like a girl.”

Opelski’s mother is taking on the fight of her life. Last month she was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer and on Thursday she received her first chemo treatment.

“I think that she’s the type of person who will be more affected by a nice gesture rather than a gift,” Opelski said.
