New grocery store 'investing in the neighborhood'

FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

From produce to frozen foods, a new grocery store is offering customers locally-made products.

Located at the former site of Witherbees Market at Martin Luther King and University Avenues, it's called The Local Grocer; and some customers see it as just that.

“I would love to see more stores like this in the city of Flint, because they're moving everything out,” said customer Sherice Redwine Spottsbille.

Owners of The Local Grocer said that bringing healthy and organic foods to downtown Flint is about helping the community.

“We've had really supportive customers who are excited that we are investing in the neighborhood, and that we're investing in Flint,” said co-owner Erin Claudell. “We're really proud of that, being Flint residents ourselves.”

Co-owners Claudell and Franklin Pleasant said that much of the produce is raised on their farm.

"It's better for you, because we know what we add to the soil to make it grow.  There's no chemicals, pesticides or fertilizers in our food at our farm," Pleasant said.

It's a way of eating they want to share with others.

"Eating healthy. We know that's a key to a healthy lifestyle. So, if we can get people to do that, that's our mission," Pleasant said.
