High school club spreads holiday cheer

Posted: Updated:

More residents are getting into the spirit of giving this holiday season.

This year the Be The Change Club at Saginaw's Heritage High School is taking the spirit to the next level.

The club hosted two giving tree events for staff and students to make gift donations to those spending the holidays at the White Pine Mental Health Center.

And for the club's founder Samantha Derdowski, the event hits close to home.

"I know what it is like to be here over the holidays and a birthday actually,” Derdowski said. “So I know it’s a hard thing to be away from friends and family over that birthday or that holiday. And to have these gifts makes them feel like they're a little more at home."

And thanks to the community, the club was able to get enough gifts and goodies to make all of the children at White Pine Mental Health Center feel cheer during Christmas.
