Pig adopted after being found on leash

BAY COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

While many folks find dogs and cats to bring home as pets for Christmas, they're not the only ones getting some love this holiday.

The Bay County Animal Control Center has been searching for a forever home for Wilbur, a pot-bellied pig.

Local sheriff's deputies found him in Auburn earlier this month with a leash around his neck.

“I have a feeling that somebody had a pig and found out how big they can get if not kept maintained on their diet and probably got too scared as to how to handle a pig that big,” said Jo Bollman, Bay County Animal Control.

No one claimed him so he was put up for adoption and on Tuesday, he's found a new home, a farm in Frankenlust.

Wilbur’s new owner Rick Dowd says he was hesitant at first.

“My wife sent me a text that she wanted this pig and I told her, no we have enough pigs at home,” Dowd said. “And then she went to work and I thought, well I'll come over and take a look at the pig. And I said, well I'll give it to her. And it's going to be one of our Christmas gifts.”

Dowd said he now has almost 20 pigs at home, but Wilbur will be the only "pet pig."
