Lamarr Woodley gives shopping spree to lucky families

SAGINAW COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

Gerelda Rodriguez is one of the dozens of people getting a little extra help this holiday season.

"Feels really good to shop with them and get them some toys for Christmas," Rodriguez

Lamarr Woodley's foundation provided families in need with a shopping spree at Walmart. Just in time for Santa's big day on Friday.

"I didn't think we we're going to be able to do too much for our kids this year and we got blessed actually," Rodriguez said.

Woodley said it's a great feeling to know that these kids will have something under the tree this year.

"That's the thing that feels great. You know to see the smile on their faces when they're picking out stuff and they're going through the line and knowing that they're going to be able to celebrate Christmas," Woodley said. "Some of these families have big families and it's hard for them to really get something for each kid."

Woodley, who grew up in Saginaw, is an NFL linebacker with the Arizona Cardinals. He starred for the Michigan Wolverines and he won a Super Bowl with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He's always found time during his pro-career to come home and make a difference.

"Saginaw made me who I am today, created me, who I am today. And I think it's always important as an athlete or anybody that's successful to come back here and show these kids something positive," Woodley said.

Woodley said he couldn't do these good deeds without the help of volunteers like Desmond Bibbs.

"Just seeing these kids having fun makes it all worth it," Bibbs said.

In all, 10 families took part in today's event. With each family member receiving one hundred dollar gift cards to help round out their list for Santa.

Rodriguez said she's looking forward to a very merry Christmas.

"Thank you. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Thanks for everything," Rodriguez said.
