SAGINAW TOWNSHIP, MI (WNEM) -

Perhaps one of the hottest items this Christmas shopping season is a hand gun.

Gun shops are cashing in on what some are calling a deteriorating sense of safety.

Phil Sheridan is the owner of Sheridan Arms in Saginaw Township.

"We've had a very large increase in gun sales," Sheridan said.

He said usually around the holidays, his gun shop and range are busy, but never as much as it's been.

“We're seeing people coming in that have never picked up a handgun before,” Sheridan said.

Sheridan said he's seeing more women than before and others who want to own a gun for the first time, and more importantly, want to learn how to use it safely.

Based on what customers are saying, Sheridan said the fear of terrorism and mass shootings is on the rise here locally.

“They had no prior interest until recently, they're now buying firearms primarily handguns to be able to protect themselves against their homes and their families,” Sheridan said.
