Ice skating rink almost ready to open in downtown

Posted: Updated:

A University of Michigan ice skating rink in downtown Flint is nearly complete, and that has some local students excited.

Amged Eidelsafy is a student at the University of Michigan-Flint. “I think this is really fun, it’s unique. Not many universities have an ice skating rink. It’ll be a focal point for Flint, it can really draw people to the university it’s right by it. And it’ll be accessible to everyone, every person. Kids, families, students.”

The rink isn’t a brand new idea, it has history in the area. It was once a favorite many years ago.

“There’s lots of stories about people who learned to skate on the rink. For us, it means, it brightens up the corner. The students have something to do and the community has something to do,” said Susan Borrego, Chancellor at U-of-M Flint.

The grand opening for the rink is Saturday, Jan. 2. That marks the first time in twenty five years that this rink has been open in downtown Flint. If you want to come and check it out, don’t let the temperatures scare you away. The rink uses something called an Icemat system, which freezes the water, even without freezing temperatures in the air.

“We thought about making a natural rink, but in Michigan they’re predicting across the board we won’t have the sustained cold temps that would make a natural rink go. I didn’t want to make a promise we couldn’t keep,” said Borrego.
