Reunion 60 years in the making

SAGINAW COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

It was a reunion 60 years in the making.

"I just cried. I did," said Janice Wight.

She’s talking about meeting her biological son Alan for the first time since giving him up in 1955.

"I took care of him for a week and had to name him, then I went home," Wight said.

Wight was 17-years-old, and unmarried when she became pregnant and had to part with Alan.

Three months later Arlene Basner adopted him.

"But I always felt bad that I had taken someone from someone else," Basner said.

The two families found each other through social media and the internet, paving the way for a big get together on Christmas Day.

"It was a wonderful, wonderful experience," Basner said.

Alan Basner lives in Atlanta, GA. He talked to TV5 over the phone about his holiday reunion.

"I was very shocked and very enlightened and very happy as well that they are what they are," Alan Basner said.

After six decades, Alan Basner said he's glad to have some answers.

"My mother had no choice in the matter. She was just a little girl herself in reality. And that changes the way that I had always thought it really was," he said.

As for Wight, she's looking forward to creating new memories with Alan and Arlene. She said this was the greatest Christmas present she could ever get.

"Hopefully this is a happy ending, that we'll always see one another. Occasionally anyway," Wright said.
