Air travel nightmare as winter storm pounds Mid-Michigan

SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

As the weekend wraps up, those home for the holidays are heading back to reality.

Or, they are at least trying to. The white Christmas many people dreamed of a few days ago pounded on Mid-Michigan Monday night and the travel nightmares have begun.

"Terrible time. It's busy to begin with, and then you throw in weather, and people are just lost," Brad Payne said.

Brad and Sarah Payne are trying to get home to Arizona after spending time with family in Bay City. They watched as almost every flight out of MBS International Airport was canceled.

"Just the waiting game, and if we don't make it back, we don't make it back. At least we have a place to stay," Sarah Payne said.

And they will get bonus family time. Angie Lima and her newborn Isa will also spend another night at her parents with no way of getting home to Nashville.

"We'll be fine, we'll get there eventually, but it's keeping her occupied during that time," Lima said.

And the story goes on as canceled flights continued to flood the board.

"People kept asking for winter, they got their winter," Rae Charles said.

It was the same story at Bishop International Airport in Flint.

"I am making this my home for the night, I'm stranded here," Melissa Helzer said.

Helzer said she'll try to get some sleep before driving to Detroit Metro in the morning for a flight to Greenville, South Carolina.

"Holiday travel plus bad weather doesn't always mix. It's sometimes a gamble, and here I am," said Helzer.

A roll of the dice that people are willing to make every Christmas.

"We've made this kind of mistake a couple of times before, but every year we keep trying," Brad Payne said.
