Help arriving to build ramp for 19-year-old who uses wheelchair

Robin Beck reached out to the TV 5 rescue squad for help, and today help is arriving.

Her 19 year-old son Brandon has cerebral palsy. And the ramp used to get him in and out of his home could use some work.

"We need a new ramp," Robin Beck said.

It's propped up by cement blocks. It needs a railing and it's too steep, making every trip away from the house an adventure for anyone using the ramp.

"One of his workers took a fall trying to get him in and luckily nobody got hurt," Robin Beck said.

She's recovering from cancer and said it's hard to get Brandon outside. For his part, Brandon Beck said he's tired of being limited to his home.

"Never get the chance to like do anything seriously," Brandon Beck said.

Robin Beck said the family also has a hydraulic lift in the garage but they can't afford to install it.

"I think the cost to install that is just as much as it is for the ramp," Robin Beck said. "So in regards to a power outages, which we've had a lot of those lately, it wouldn't do us a lot of good to have that hooked up so given the choice the ramp would be better right now."

Beck has sought help through Ogemaw County and the state. And while she's been told some form of assistance is on the way, it hasn't gotten to her yet.

That's why she turned to the TV5 Rescue Squad.

"It would mean a lot to me, but I think it would mean more to Brandon because he just loves to get out in the community," Robin Beck said.

Robin took a picture Wednesday of crews from the Home Depot and Randy Rourke Custom Homes outside of her home. After seeing her story on TV5, the companies volunteered to do the necessary work. Crews are at the home today, and hope to finish up on Thursday.
