Ski slopes grateful for arrival of winter weather

"Winter has finally come to Michigan," said Kathy Schofiel.

Staff members at Apple Mountain in Freeland rejoice over the cold temperatures.

The conditions are finally perfect to open the ski slopes on Wednesday Jan. 6.

"It's very exciting because the conditions are going to be so good. Up until about two weeks ago we were really nervous about what the season was going to look like," Schofiel said.

Schofiel is a spokesperson for Apple Mountain. She said they were hoping to be able to open the ski mountain earlier this year, but it’s not the first time they’ve had to wait until January.

"We're about two weeks late but it's not unusual, I think if you've been in Michigan for any length of time you know it eventually comes," Schofiel said.

Several snow machines were spread out along the slopes pumping out fresh snow.

And Schofiel said they can't wait to see skiers and snowboarders shredding it this week.

"Making snow and as you can see almost up to 80 percent of the slopes have been covered anywhere from 10 to 24 inches base," Schofiel said.

Snow machines will be back on the mountain pumping out snow on Tuesday. The slopes will open on Wednesday morning at 10 a.m.
